- Leveraging your core competency is everything. But, successful Franchise Executives will tell you that the toughest lesson they had to learn was "when" and "how" to delegate to best leverage their brand and system.
- Lay out a plan, but maintain the role of a Project Manager and refine your system into increments that can be refined and implemented by your team. - Define each team member's highest and best use and let them fly. Bring the increments together to form a system coordinated by you but developed by a team of experts.

- Focus your franchise development efforts on adjacent markets and grow outwards using a focused market approach. It's all about brand density, brand recognition, ease of support and amortization of costs.
- Resist the temptation of granting a franchise on the other side of the country just so you can receive an upfront Franchise Fee. Go for the county line, not the country line to start. Literally map out a precision growth plan around a geographically targeted franchise development approach and stick to it. Doing so will build your brand faster and place it on a solid foundation for continued growth, maximizing advertising and marketing while minimizing system support costs.
4. Recognizing That Your Best Franchise Candidates Are Right In Front Of You:
- Successful Franchise Executives recognize patterns. They are redirecting the majority of their franchise development budget away from the shotgun approach utilized by Franchise Sales Portals and focusing on markets where their brand is already operating with room for growth. And who better to seek out than those customers that value your business the most? They are among your BEST assets, directly behind your system and the franchisees who are already implementing it.
- Promote your franchise opportunity to those that are already the best of the best... your best, most dedicated and appreciative customers. After all, they already know all about your brand and your system. Target them first. Your best customers will be your best franchisees. It's all about recognizing patterns.
5. Acknowledging The Shifts:
- Whether you're an established franchisor or simply new to franchising, you have to adapt to today's marketplace. Then, you have to recognize the future and take a proactive approach to advancing your brand and system to continually refine itself. Successful Franchise Executives have acknowledged the shift in THIS recession as being vastly different from prior recessions, which previously benefitted franchise expansion.
- Lack of access to capital has made THIS recession very different. The Prime Directive simply must be The New Franchise ROI. It's beyond increasing sales that lead to more royalties primarily benefitting the franchisor.
- Advise franchisees how to operate more efficiently, leverage and consolidate, increase their bottom line AND boost morale. Period. Successful Franchise Executives have redoubled efforts to generate increased net income for their franchisees over and above simply generating more sales. And, they're doing it in a way that is providing hope, on a daily basis to their franchisees... real hope. That's acknowledging the shift and then some. It's working!
6. Invest In Your Franchisees:
- Recognize that your franchisees are your BEST assets. If their ROI grows, your ROI grows.
- Consider developing high performance franchisees as an investment in their future and your future. Rather than take a chance on a new franchise candidate for a franchise territory adjacent to an existing franchisee, consider approaching the existing franchisee with an opportunity to expand first. If they're successful already, they stand the best chance of duplicating that success in a secondary unit or territory.
- Consider greatly reducing or even waiving your secondary Franchise License Fee.
- Consider taking back paper to help your existing franchisee expand. If they're successful that means they're following your system and will continue to do so. Hedge your bet.
- Go with the known quantity. Invest in your best assets. They're the ones that stand the best chance of obtaining financing based on their proven track record of following your franchise system. They can amortize costs, continue to expand their customer base and continue to expand your brand. It's a win-win for everyone and everyone's future.
7. The Importance Of Helping Your Franchisees Understand "Why":
- Most franchisees have never taken the time to sit down and determine "why" they are operating their own business. Whereas successful franchisors provide a system consisting of a proven vehicle and a business plan or roadmap to follow, franchisees are the ones who need to bring the fuel to produce a winning combination.
- Set out to develop a 5 year plan with your franchisees. Divide it into 60 increments called "months". Establish incremental milestones that can be reached every 30 days.
- Give your franchisees the steps each month. They will get them to work. Then, give them a pat on the back and help them move to the next milestone.
- Focus your franchisees on the short-term goals that can be achieved and do not deviate to thinking beyond them.
- Maintain your focus on your franchisees' focus. Their 5-year goal is their "why". Franchisees must be required to define their "why" and state it to you at the onset of each milestone effort. You'll see patterns: more time with the family; pay off debt; cash out and retire; put the kids through college; grow into multi-unit status. All are "why statements" that may have nothing to do with your particular franchise system, but EVERYTHING to do with why franchisees continue to get out of bed each morning. It's all about the "why".
8. Knowing Your Exit Strategy:
- Now that you've helped your franchisees determine their "why", what about you, the franchisor? Why are you doing this? What are you in it for? Where do you want to be in 5 years AND "why"? More time with your family? Payoff debt? Cash out and retire? Sound familiar? Break the 5-year plan down into sixty 30-day increments. The next thing you know, you'll be 30 months out, then 10, and then 5. You'll see the light at the end of the tunnel NOW if you define YOUR "why" now.
- Define it and stick to it. Post photos that represent your "why" near your workspace or on your mirror or on your refrigerator. Anywhere and everywhere.
- Ask if you are you going to work your butt off over the next 5 years no matter what you do? Your answer will likely be "yes". If so, "why"? And/or "for what"? Now is the time to define where you truly want to be in life. It's all right in front of you and it's just 60 steps away.
9. Recognizing Your Opportunities:
- Recognize that there ARE opportunities for growth out there. Period. It's a lot like a piano keyboard. Whether you play the piano or not, take the time to sit down at a piano sometime. Just look at the black and white keys. There are generally 88 of them.
- Realize that EVERY hit song that ever was and EVERY hit song that will EVER be is right in front of you. It all comes down to the order in which you press those black and white things. That's it. And, when you think that all of the hits have already been written and all the possible combinations of notes have been done already, think again. Do you think Lady Gaga has run her course? No hit songs on the radio next week? Not likely. Opportunities in franchising, even in today's economy, are the same. There are plenty of hit songs that have yet to be written. Write them.
